What is your backup method to the computer software?

The operation is smooth with the use of the computer, say the inventory system is working out all right. But then a virus hits the network and the computer was down. Do you have a backup system for that or do you revert to the manual method? Our inventory system is based on software but we have a manual of operation just in case something goes wrong with the computer. Particularly during the audit period, the computer system is very important for the warehouse.

I don't think it's practical to use manual inventory nowadays, so it's best to just keep it digital and have a good backup as a contingency. For our store, we use a cloud based system which I know isn't advisable for many other companies especially larger ones, but for us it's just the right tool because we get to update items and prices across the board and anyone can check and input data even with just their phone.

If you are hit really badly by a computer virus, most likely you'd wish you had a complete backup to a previous working state in order to scratch the virus off.

This is exactly what entire system backup achieves!

You may want to get an affordable tried-and-true solution like Backblaze:

https://www.backblaze.com

They offer full-system backup with goodies such as web download, mail restore and mobile access.

Feel free to check out this comprehensive list for others:

Everything I need is backed up through various means, anything I can write down on paper gets written on paper and I'll take a picture of it if I'm scared I'll lose that too. My work is not extremely demanding for backups, but I've probably wasted 30-50 hours through my career fixing documents I accidentally closed...

I've thankfully never had to deal with data loss except for a few minor ones that hit me when we had blackouts before I could save certain files or documents. In school we were always aimed to keep saving constantly and even my friends there always reminded each other of it regularly as well so it's a practice ingrained into me by now. The worst for me is when I get way too into the actual work itself that I lose sense of everything else such as saving but fortunately that's rare.

Some offices have two different servers. One hosts all their main files while the backup files are stored in the other. IT guys take charge of the backup and although the trend has become more cloud-oriented, having an offline backup method is just as effective and relatively safe from hacking attempts.

I agree. I think these days cloud backup has gotten more and more popular, but like you said the problem is security, and with most cloud services it's rare that a big company would entrust their information with another company unless they specialize in security. Remote servers are also used but from what it understand in extreme cases one should be prepared to go there physically should trouble arise that can't be dealt with remotely.

Good point regarding hacking attempts. Something that many do not take into consideration when choosing a backup strategy. It is important that your company's confidential information remains confidential? Surely you have a list of customers with personal information such as their address and telephone number at the very minimum. This information is quite valuable and should not fall into the wrong hands.

Cost alone should not be the only variable to opt for one or another backup method. Nice advice indeed.

A few things to note. If your network goes down, it isn't likely to be because of a virus. Hacking attempts a rare unless you have a large high traffic database accessible from the internet. It is more important to back up data and configuration than the actual software.

If the software on your computer is crucial for the company then daily backups are a must, something like this happened at my place of work when a virus got into our system and started to delete files. We had external HDDs with everything on it and that basically saved the company from going bankrupt, trojans are no joke. Do your backups, people! :D

Re: What is your backup method to the computer software?

You need to identify the most crucial part of your data and back it up daily. Other data can be backed up weekly then monthly in order of importance. It is important to include an off site backup in addition to an onsite backup up plan. If your data is important you need to do what you can to protect it from being destroyed or deleted,
