Listening to music while working

Re: Listening to music while working

Every work environment is different. It would be fine for some, very bad in others. Even where it is an acceptable environment there will always be somebody that doesn't care for the selection. It may improve performance for those that enjoy it, but what about those that don't?

Re: Listening to music while working

Depending on the work I either do it all the time or do not do it at all. I am not employed and I work from home. Transcribing, of course, doesn't give me the space for music since I need to be concentrated on the audio file. However, I do make some DIY stuff all the time and then I listen to music and actually I cannot work without it. Music makes me more relaxed and after a stressful day in front of my laptop I really need some relaxation. Even when I'm making a break from transcription I put my music on.

I listen to music even while at work. I'm just blessed to be in a workplace that's really lenient. Also, just working your head off without the slightest of sound, can be detrimental to your emotional and mental well-being. You do not want to feel like a robot. At least music humanizes you no matter how hectic or busy your work load is.

I don't have the luxury of listening to music while working, the type of job i do requires my undivided attention, although even if i can listen to music, i normally prefer to work without distraction anyway. Music can be distracting, don't get me wrong i enjoy listening to music, in fact i have a huge collection on my mobile phone, but at work, i want to focus on the job.

Re: Listening to music while working

Some types of work are ok for listening to music. The kind of work where I am up and moving, completeing physical tasks. Music is ok for that. But when I need to concentrate and really give my brain a workout, I do not need the distraction. I am someone who prefers silence over music or tv. So this is how it affects me. I love the sound of silence.

Yeah, there are some jobs you really shouldn't be listening to music in. For example, if you're on a rocketship to the moon, maybe don't listen to led zep. Likewise, EMTs, firefighters, etc. But hey, maybe it would help? Who's really to say?

Re: Listening to music while working

I would say that, to play music or not can largely depend on the nature of work. For instance, you wouldn't expect a firm of auditors to be keen on playing music.

And where music is okay to play, then the question of genre arises. While the architectures would prefer instrumental music, people working in warehouse can do with music with words.

I work in a convenience store and here, almost any kind of music goes but with a bias on soul. This is because the music isn't played mainly for the employees but the customers.

I agree that music depends upon the type of work you are doing. However, I do creative writing a lot for one of my jobs and absolutely cannot have music on at all. It really hinders hearing the voice in my head that sort of formulates sentences to write.

For me, it depends on the type of work that I'm currently doing. I currently work full-time as a freelance writer and a freelance illustrator. When I'm doing illustration stuff like drawing, painting, or digital rendering, I usually have music playing in the background. This is because the music doesn't interfere with what I'm doing. I can draw and enjoy music at the same time. However, when I'm writing and I need to focus on what I'm writing, I turn the music player off.

I find that listening to music while working makes the task seem a bit easier. When there is total silence if find that if the task is challenging it seems a bit more burdensome to manage compared to when there is music playing in the background. I can now understand many people tend to believe that music can be a form of therapy.

Re: Listening to music while working

I work at home and my work time is from 4am to 8am. I do like a little noise, it doesn't have to be music. I like to have videos turned down kind of low, just for a bit of noise. It keeps me company and I think I work more efficiently. It probably also helps keep me awake.

Good point. I think this option be considered to be allowed whenever the job allows for it because those that work well with music will tend to put out better work if they are allowed to Work the way they want to. I guess some jobs will tend to be less conducive to this method but if it's possible to allow workers not to feel like they are being made into too much of a robot then it really should be looked into and allowed.

Re: Listening to music while working

There are many warehouse where you are not allowed to listen to music while you work. Because is distracting. Accidents can occur when people are distracted. And to minimize the risk . . .

That said, I think no one should be listening to music while working. You need to focus on the work you are doing and if you like music you can listen to it afterwards.

If yоur wоrk nееds yоur full аttеntiоn аnd yоu tеnd tо bе thе pеrsоn whо саnnоt pаy full аttеntiоn whеn musiс is оn, thеn listеning tо musiс whilе wоrking might turn intо а bаd idеа.
But thеn, I hаvе friеnds whо саn pаy thеir full аttеntiоn оnly whеn thе musiс is оn. If yоu turn оff thе musiс thеy wоuld bесоmе соnsсiоus оf thеir surrоundings аnd саn nоt sustаin full аttеntiоn. Re: Listening to music while working

I will not allow workers to listen to music with ear buds in. Too much can happen from not being able to hear your surroundings, and it turns in to a liability issue. However, we always leave the radio on, out loud, so every one can hear, and its not too loud that we cant hear each other talking, but loud enough to help us concentrate on getting things done.

Re: Listening to music while working

I am the kind of person that cannot listen to music whilst I am working or doing something that requires me to be focused, it's really mind blowing and frustrating for me to do it, however, I really like listening to music when I am doing the chores, washing the car, or cleaning the house, in my opinion, it's way better and also more enjoyable, I personally think that work is something I do not like to interrupt and music is definitely not my best friend when working, but it mostly depends on the kind work itself.

I love to play my favorite tracks while working in the office and I like instrumental and songs both.
