Re: Is supply chain management an under looked career field?

As far as supply chain being an "underlooked" career field, I don't think so. Does it bear heavy potential as a career? Most definitely.

Supply chain management can lead you down many different career paths and it's also one of the fastest growing career fields due to the worldwide realization of the benefits it brings to a company. Supply chain has always been around in different forms but has really come into shape as it's own department in a lot of companies recently. From a "bottom-line" perspective, proper supply chain management in a company can dramatically decrease costs and increase revenue. There are multiple departments/teams/roles in companies that are wrapped up under supply chain management. Some examples being:
A. Planning and Order Fulfillment (Department)
(Below are teams within department)
- Logistics
*Logistics Analyst
*Shipping System Admins and Analyst
*Waste Management Admins and Analysts
- Routing
*Routing Supervisors and Analysts
*Route Brokers
- Demand Planning
*Capacity Planning Admin
*Order Forecaster
*Materials Forecaster
*Long Term Demand Planner
- Production Scheduling
*Production Planner
*Production Scheduler
- Manufacturing Support
*Manufacturing Process Analysts
*Lean Process Analysts
- Managerial Cost
*Managerial Cost Admins and Analysts

B. Transportation
- I don't have as much experience here, and these departments aren't normally as large. However, having a transportation department is very important due to all of the regulations imposed on tractor trailers, HTS codes for crossing borders and freight costs.

C. Back Office Logistics
-Some companies have this department because they produce a lot of products that require A LOT of smaller items to make this product, such as Siemens IA. All the nuts, bolts, metal caps, metal plates, push buttons, wires, etc. (basically all the purchased raw materials) have to be kept up with by somebody.
-Purchasing sometimes falls under this department
*Buyer
- Product Lifecycle Management
* PLM Admins and Analysts

There are so many career paths in supply chain management. Supply chain management is basically about reducing costs and increasing revenues by increasing efficiency in any way possible. As companies start to realize the value of all the data tracking and analysis that produces such valuable outputs from supply chain management there will be more and more career possibilities out there in the industry. Hope this helped a little!

I think that your geographical location can have a lot to do in regards to career potential in supply chain management. I wouldn't say its an over looked field but the average person is not going to be aware of its existence. I live in an area where there is a lot of government and government work. Many national and multinational corporations that produce complex military and civilian items have their headquarters and production facilities in the surrounding area. This opens a lot of doors for career potential due to the amount of work in the area.

Supply chain management is not that popular here and more popular are the warehouse custodians. With regards to big warehouses like that of supermarkets, the procurement director is the overall boss. Maybe it is just the name supply chain management that is not popular but I'm sure the function of it is assumed by the warehouse custodian or the warehouse manager or even the purchasing section or department. And for a career, I really cannot say how one can make a career path for supply chain management because it is not really considered an industry, hmm, maybe just a sub-industry in terms of popular consideration.

I kind of agree with the under-looked part. Mainly because few people actually really comprehend what supply chain management is (primarily a management field). And also because it is so cross-skill, complex and inter-dependent on so many other fields (process engineering, production engineering, logistics, systems engineering, statistical engineering, business administration). It is also a new field that has not really existed before the 1990s (80s if we stretch), and was only formalized in the late 90s and early 2000s.

It has a heavy potential as a career BUT, it is very difficult to make it in this field. As it is a management position, you need the experience and reputation. One comes with time (and being at the right place), the other is prolonged and mostly unpaid hard work.
