Default The Complete Guide to a Supply Chain Analyst Career for Freshers

Supply chain analyst has emerged as one of the most popular supply chain career options in last decade or so. The importance of supply chain management in overall business management has increased significantly. Combine this with the increasing complexity of supply chains and you can explain why various organizations are looking more and more for specialists who can leverage data to help improve supply chain performance.

Despite its popularity, the amount of resources and guidance available to students interested in supply chain analyst career path is very limited. There is an ever increasing lack of clarity on the roles of analysts and the lack of standard nomenclature doesn’t help either. I always read graduate students and freshers asking questions like “what does a supply chain analyst do?”, “how do I break into a supply chain analyst role?”, “what do my potential employers look for in an ideal candidate?” on various forums. But they don’t get comprehensive guidance on pursuing a career as a supply chain analyst.

Companies in most sectors including automobile, CPG, retail, e-commerce, consulting etc. look to hire graduates for entry level supply chain analyst jobs. However, it is important for graduates to understand what skills are required for an analyst position and how they can build those skills while in college so that they can land a job in an analyst role straight out of college. So, I have created a comprehensive guide for supply chain students who are interested in pursuing a career as an analyst.

In this guide, I will cover, various topics related to the supply chain analyst career path:

    1. What does a supply chain analyst do?
    2. Entry Level Supply Chain Analyst Jobs
    3. Supply Chain Analyst Skills
    4. Analytical Capabilities Leveraged by Analysts
    5. Supply Chain Analyst Salary Details
    6. Tips for Building a Perfect Supply Chain Analyst Resume

Well I am not sure what it is but anytime I hear phrases like complete guide or everything you need to know I get a little excited, because I start to think that I can become an expert on something new overnight. Of course we all know that is not how it ends up happening, but nonetheless it does provide a handy tool to have if you ever need to know something about a certain topic. I have an MBA so I am pretty stocked on business textbooks and all of that, but this might be something that I need to look more into to get a better grasp on things. Thanks for sharing.

The idea is not to turn your career upside down overnight. Rather it is to show you the options available and provide you the initial guidance that you require. Please let me know if I can be of any help,

Thank you for posting this - very helpful. There aren't many resources out there for a supply chain career path. I actually also came across a company offering a supply chain management scholarship for students. Please spread the word to any college students you know that may be pursuing this career path and could use the tuition help.

There are several logistic companies providing opportunities to freshers. Its a great platform for youngsters to explore their innovative ideas. Even supply chain is strongly suited to female workers. Soft skills such as collaboration, creativity and problem solving are in high demand by employers and women already in the industry have expressed their love of their work as they multi-task, face daily challenges and in the fast – paced nature of their work environment.

Would like to have your advise here:

I currently have a work experience of 5 years in an MNC in India. In the initial 4.5 years of my work ex, i was in a role of a team lead where we worked on a project, which was more focussed towards the SQL and ASP .NET technology. Being a team lead , i was more into client interactions and meetings and hence couldn't had a grip on these technologies . As soon as i left that project, i started studying for GMAT but eventually got a call from a different project which was totally focussed on Supply Chain for the FMCG companies. It's been around 5 months now in this project, and i currently handle one of the distributor's location based in Bengaluru, India. I'm uncertain where this project will lead me to, as i don't have any Masters degree and at the same time have forgotten the things learned during the GMAT preparation. Hence, I need guidance to chose a better option. Should i continue in this Supply Chain Project, aware of the fact that all my peers in the current Supply Chain project have pursued their MBA degrees, and at the same time i, having pursued a Bachelor's degree in engineering, am working on the same role as they are currently into? Should i resume GMAT to pursue an MBA degree OR Should i go for a Specific skill course related to Supply Chain? If the latter, kindly suggest a few Supply chain skill specific courses?
