The logistics involves planning, implementing and controlling efficient, effective flow and storage of goods and services from the beginning point of external origin to the company and from the company to the point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to customer requirements while Supply Chain encompasses the planning and management of all activities involved in sourcing and procurement, conversion, and all Logistics management activities.
It also includes coordination and collaboration with channel partners, which can be suppliers, intermediaries, third-party service providers, and customers.

Logistics is under Supply Chain Management, logistics is a small part of supply chain that deals with the management of goods in an effictive and efficient way. Supply chain management is much broader and it encompasses the collaboration and coordination of suppliers etc.

Supply Chain Management is a new concept as compared to Logistics. Logistics is only an activity of Supply Chain Management. Both are inseparable. Hence they do not contradict but supplement each other. SCM helps Logistics to be in touch with the transportation, storage and distribution team. The flow and storage of goods inside and outside the firm are known as Logistics. The movement and integration of supply chain activities are known as Supply Chain Management. The main aim of Logistics is full customer satisfaction. Conversely, the main aim behind Supply Chain Management is to gain a substantial competitive advantage.

Logistics is a component of supply chain management. In traditional organizations, the supply chain process encompasses logistics, production planning, warehousing and customer service processes. In today's context, some organisations have incorporated production operations as part of the supply chain process. The scope of supply chain is to deliver an end to end supply chain solution of an organization to fulfil sales order commitments. As such, some organizations have incorporated production operations into the supply chain process to strengthen the order fulfilment objective.

The supply chain process is a value chain process, that delivers value to the organization at the most cost effective approach. It ensures that the organization benefits from each sales order that it secures. These issues are mostly discussed and agreed in the S&OP process. Supply chain management would also be the first party to challenge sales or marketing, if they have secured a bad sales order. The S&OP process is a critical process in most FMCG industries.

Logistics is a cost centre function, it incurs cost to deliver products from 1 point to the next, until it reaches the customer's required incoterm. Logistics does not generate any revenue by itself, as such, it's key objective is to deliver products to the customers at the required time at the least cost. There is often contradiction between on time order fulfilment and cost, when this happens the key objective would be to deliver products to customer on a timely basis for the least cost. On time order fulfilment (OTIF) takes priority over cost.
Off course there will some industries that are driven purely by cost effectiveness for survival, as such, cost efficiency takes priority over OTIF. Customers do not mind taking the delivery at a later date for the benefit of cost efficiency.
Logistics is such a dynamic process, that requires an open mind for innovative solutions and a passion to explore possible solutions. This is an area that requires time investment to explore possible alternatives with a cost sensitive approach.

    Nice Topic,

The difference between logistics and Supply Chain Management is that logistics is the part of Supply chain management. Logistics is the word used to supply the goods from supplier to customer.

Logistics Management is a little section of Supply Chain Management that deals with the management of goods in an efficient way. Supply Chain Management, it is a broader term which refers to the connection, right from the suppliers to the ultimate consumer.
