They are in fact very important, as a bad strategy for a supply chain will get you through a lot of unwanted troubles, without a proper management you will either end up with your racks empty, with too much stuff which it's over the limit date for consumption or with no clients at all.

Of course, having good strategy is the secret to every type of business success. Whether you engage your clients or focus on your marketing, what you do to increase reputation and get a solid customer base forms part of your business strategy.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is an essential element to operational efficiency.
SCM can be applied to customer satisfaction and company success, as well as within
societal settings, including medical missions; disaster relief operations and other kinds
of emergencies; cultural evolution; and it can help improve quality of life. Because
of the vital role SCM plays within organisations, employers seek employees with an
abundance of SCM skills and knowledge.
Thus supply chain management strategies are
          very important.

As with everything else for you to succeed at anything you need strategies that will give you an edge over your competitors and also retain your customers. Without supply chain management strategies you'll find yourself drifting as you try to find out what works and what doesn't and whilst doing that waste money and lose your customers because there are things you might not be doing right. So to answer your question @OP, supply chain management strategies certainly are very important.

Strategies regarding every aspect of your business are important to be honest and while I agree that we can't plan for every eventuality, the more prepared we are, the better chance we have at surviving as small business owners. Planning is one thing, but we also have to try and make sure that we then make sure that them plans also then get implemented and I think that's where a lot of businesses fall down. we might have a long term plan in place but as we go along, something will happen and we'll deviate away from the plan and fail to reevaluate the long term goal.

We need to know where we are starting from, and know how we are going to hit a certain target, and the only way to do that is if we have a strategy in place and while it can be changed along the way, we also have to remember to alter the long term plan as well.

Well before starting your own company you need to have a strategy in order to get the company rolling otherwise you'll struggle and run around like a headless chicken. Usually you can't plan for every bad thing that's going to happen but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have a backup plan in place. I've noticed that the one with the better strategy strives in Supply Chain Management.

As you say, a lot of businesses won't just have the one strategy in place, but will have a plan B and sometimes even a plan C as well to fall back on just in case the original plan or strategy fails. While I can appreciate that setting up this can take a lot of time and effort in the first place, you'll find that as time changes, you ill need more than one plan of action if you are going to keep up with the fast pace of business these days, and just sticking to one strategy and not being flexible enough to change can cost you in the long run.

It especially depends on what you're doing. Supply chain strategies can help you prevent more issues down the line, and help you keep everything straight if an error occurs in shipping. Frankly I don't see how any kind of warehouse business can get by without one.

I am interested to hear the arguments of people who are saying that they are not important, because that really escapes me. Anytime you can apply strategies and theories to real life scenarios, and grow from them and learn, the better off you are, as a person and as a company. If nothing else, they are important to eliminate them as a theory so that you can move on to other theories or systems. Management is an ever evolving practice, and for that you need to be on top of your game when it comes familiarity will all systems dynamics. Interesting stuff, and thanks for sharing.

Re: Are supply chain management strategies important?

I am bit puzzled by what it seems to be a confusion of some people here between the "Supply Chain Management", which is a definite set of principles & strategies (and a management buzzword) in the world of efficient companies that apply lean/six sigma/Kaizen etc as opposed to to the management of the "supply chain", in its old (deprecated) sense of just handling procurement of material in a pure logistical sens, in which case the correct and more precise term to use is ERP (entreprise resource planning).

In any case they are both important, but the former only if you are a "real company", i.e. a small workshop/family business or a restaurant/bar don't have the slightest clue about this stuff and don't need it anyway, they don't even apply 5S. Size matters in these things, you won't see the benefits, importance, extreme complexity of supply chain management unless you are a large player handling a lot with disparate plants, set of skills, independent streams of information, cluster of specialized workshops, extended production line, complex process(es) and so forth.

Re: Are supply chain management strategies important?

For the supply chain management we have gone over data of inventory as well as supply chain of past 6 months and measured the duration from ordering to the product reaching us to ensure that we are never running out of supply of products.

At the same point of time, we use predictive analysis to understand which products would be having a above average supply and which products would be having a average supply and depending on this, we create the strategies to order the products and have them reach our warehouse.

Yes, the supply chain management involves optimizing your operations to maximize both speed and efficiency. Speed is important because customers value fast service. Increasing speed, however, can cause costs to skyrocket, so maximizing efficiency is equally important. The most effective supply chains deliver products as fast and as cheaply as possible without sacrificing quality. Some companies like Ecoark accomplish this by using complicated logistics tools, such as computer algorithms that choose optimal routes for product shipping and large company databases that allow distant employees to pool order information and coordinate their efforts in real time.
